What is blood bananas?

Blood bananas, or red bananas, are a variety of banana with a dark red or maroon skin and a sweet, creamy flesh. They are smaller than regular bananas and have a slightly stronger flavor.

Blood bananas get their red color from pigments called anthocyanins, which are also found in other red or purple fruits like blueberries and blackberries. These pigments are believed to have antioxidant properties and may offer some health benefits.

Blood bananas are primarily grown in Central and South America, particularly in countries like Ecuador, Colombia, and Costa Rica. They are typically grown in small quantities and are more expensive than regular bananas.

Due to their unique appearance and flavor, blood bananas are often used in desserts, smoothies, and other dishes to add a pop of color and interest. However, because they are not as widely available as regular bananas, they can be harder to find in some areas.
